Statement of Purpose (SOP) is an important aspect of your Canadian university application. Remember – universities receive thousands of applications from students around the world, every year. So, you need a Statement of Purpose that’s not written using a template you got online or copied from a senior student. As the name suggests, this essay is written to show that you are a perfectly suitable candidate for the program you are applying to. Sketch a good SOP on your own to will impress the admissions committee of your university. Below are some sop writing tips.

Tips for Writing Great Statement of Purpose

  1. Write a powerful introduction

Grab the attention of the busy admissions committee with a strong introduction. Use facts and narrate your story instead of the clichés like “I want to join this program as my skills will blossom at your university. I would love to face new challenges at your university and develop my technical knowledge.”

  1. It should be an easy read

Write it in simple and easy-to-understand language. Make no grammar and punctuation errors. Using uncommon words to display your vocabulary skills might work against you. Anything that the admissions committee find difficult to read and render is useless. The essay must be well structured, with short paragraphs.

  1. Be specific

Explain your goals clearly. Why do you love this field? Why do you want to work in this field for the rest of your life? What skills you are trying to acquire? These are some of the questions that the university expects you to answer. Always write down your experience that have helped you to tune up and the steps you have already taken towards achieving them.

  1. Be genuine

It is natural for you to feel that your story and achievements are not worth mentioning. Never create stories. The admissions officers have been doing there jobs for years and can spot the lie. Just be yourself.

  1. Include extra-curricular activities & work experience

One common mistake of the applicants is to write more about their academic achievements. It does not matter if you are not a national level soccer player. It is important to mention the activities you have participated in. Sports, debates, clubs and other activities add value as it shows what kind of a person you are. Someone who has been a part of these could be a team worker or a leader in future.

If you have any work experience, even a summer job, mention it. There must be something that you have learnt during that experience, and the universities would appreciate it.

  1. Proofread and edit

Ask your friends, family or professors their opinion about your essay. Edit it till you think it is perfect. Proofread it many times and make it flawless.
